Quality of the emergency psychiatric examination in the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital of Camagüey
Abstract
Introduction: The emergency psychiatric examination is the only document that certifies on a scientific basis what the mental state of the subject was at that moment, which is evidenced in the medical-legal prognosis.
Objective: To evaluate the errors found in emergency psychiatric examinations at the Dr. René Vallejo Ortiz Provincial Psychiatric Hospital in Camagüey.
Methods: A observational, cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from November 2020 to January 2023. 130 psychiatric examinations were evaluated at the aforementioned institution were reviewed. The information collected in the form was included in the database which was processed through the statistical program SPSS version 25, unvaried statistical techniques were used in the determination of absolute and relative frequencies.
Results: In the emergency psychiatric examinations, n=95 (73.1%) errors occurred, of which n=48 (36.9%) occurred at night. In the general data, errors were found mainly related to stamps and signatures n=63 (48.5 %) as well as the date and time n=55 (45.4 %), the name of the institution n=47 (36.2 %). In the psychiatric evaluation section, errors were detected in the preparation of the synthesis functions n=61 (46.9 %), cognitive n=42, (32.3 %) and thinking n=39, (30.0 %).
Conclusions: Problems were detected in most of the emergency psychiatric examinations reviewed, affecting all sections. The most frequent errors turned out to be the evaluation of the synthesis functions in the psychiatric evaluation, as well as the description and criteria of the evaluated person in the crime description section.
