Knowledge, attitudes, and practices on prevention of dental caries in teenagers who practice sports
Abstract
Introduction: In recent years, sporting activity has continued to attract a growing number of adolescents and young people. The high standards of performance required by an athlete can only be achieved by a completely healthy individual, which is why oral health takes on great importance.
Objective: To identify the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of adolescents about the prevention of dental caries and its relationship with sports practice.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out on the sports team of Fomento, Sancti Spíritus province from February to October 2023. The universe consisted of 72 adolescents and 24 were selected by simple random sampling. The studied variables were: the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices on prevention of dental caries and its relationship with sports practice. Theoretical, empirical (survey, observation, and interview), and mathematical-statistical methods were used.
Results: The initial diagnosis determined a low level of knowledge in 87.5% of the adolescents studied. Tooth brushing practices were inadequate for 70.8% and 54.2% showed unfavorable attitudes related to the subject.
Conclusions: A low level of knowledge about dental caries prevention measures and their relationship with sports practice was identified in the majority of adolescents. Oral hygiene practices turned out to be inadequate, and unfavorable attitudes also predominated.
