Pregnancy in adolescence in a Health Area
Abstract
Introduction: Pregnancy in adolescence is one of the consequences of ignorance of sexual and reproductive health, its importance lies in the fact that it has a negative impact on the health of the mother and child, which constitutes a public health problem and a true social tragedy.
Objective: To characterize some clinical-epidemiological aspects of pregnant teenagers.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out on pregnant adolescents belonging to the José Martí Polyclinic, Santiago de Cuba municipality, in the period from January to December 2022. The study population consisted of 350 patients who met the inclusion criteria and a sample was selected by simple random sampling of 100 pregnant teenagers. The studied variables were: age, education, marital status, number of sexual partners, age of initiation of sexual relations, diseases associated with pregnancy, and family functioning.
Results: The group of women between 17 and 19 years of age predominated (57%), 55% had a pre-university level and were single, with a predominance of those who had started sexual relations between 14-16 years (42%). 56% of the families were classified as moderately functional. Vaginal infection was the most common pregnancy-associated disease (56%).
Conclusions: Adolescents began their first sexual relations in the middle stage, with more than three sexual partners, sexually transmitted diseases were frequent, and may be related to risky sexual behaviors and family functioning.
