Educational intervention on sexually transmitted infections in adolescents from Cristino Naranjo High School in Palma Soriano
Abstract
Introduction: Sexually transmitted infections are a global health problem that affects people all over the world and an important health problem in adolescents.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention in adolescents of the Cristino Naranjo High School on sexually transmitted infections.
Methods: A development study, interventional type, was carried out in the period between April and June of the year 2023 at the Cristino Naranjo High School, Palma Soriano Municipality, Santiago de Cuba Province. The universe consisted of 284 adolescents and the sample of 103 adolescents and selected by non-probabilistic method at the discretion of the authors. An interview was used before and after the educational intervention, with which the level of knowledge they had about STIs/AIDS, risk factors, means of protection and transmission routes was evaluated.
Results: 75 adolescents (72.81%) had sexual relations, prior to the intervention the level of knowledge was bad in 95 adolescents (92.24%), observing a change to a good level in 99 adolescents (96.11%) after the intervention, 16 (15.54%) adolescents were not worried about getting an STI/HIV/AIDS, a situation that changed when the intervention was carried out, where 101 (98.06%) adolescents were worried about contagion.
Conclusions: The implementation of the educational intervention turned out to be effective by showing an increase in the acquisition of knowledge by adolescents regarding STIs.
