Maternal and perinatal characterization of diabetic pregnant woman

Abstract

Background: the care of diabetic patients is an important objective of health systems around the world. When this condition is associated to the pregnancy it requires a special care because it may causes different complications in pregnant women, fetus and new born.
Objective:
to describe the results related to the labor of diabetic pregnant.
Methods:
an observational descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in in Provincial University Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital at Camagüey during 2007-2015. The universe was sample by 1972 pregnant women that were divided in two groups. The data were obtained from medical records and they were processed by descriptive statistics.
Results:
87, 37 % pregnant women suffered from gestational diabetes. 165 new born were macrocosmic and 85 had intrauterine growth retardation. In this study 38 new born died and 17 had some congenital malformation.
Conclusions: gestational diabetes is more frequent than pre-gestational diabetes in a group of pregnant women. The most common alteration at the end of pregnancy in these women was macrocosmic. An important objective of medical services in diabetic’s pregnant women is to reduce fetal mortality and mortality around the labor.
