Background: fracture of the proximal humerus is a common traumatic affection, affecting patients with osteoporosis on that anatomic region. Treatment may be conservative or surgical and depends on factors related to the patient and the kind of fracture.
Objective: to deepen into knowledge of patients with fractures of the proximal humerus because it is highly frequent in casualty department.
Methods: an information search in the databases PubMed, Hinari, SciELO and Medline was done through EndNote by using the words fractures of the proximal humerus and shoulder trauma, resulting in a total of 2023 articles which 50 of them were selected for review, 47 of them from the last five years, including seven books. It was conducted for a month (September.
Development: muscular deformity forces were described, as well as the most used classification system which divided the fractures in parts. Imaging investigations were pointed out, based mainly on conventional radiographies. Treatment was described according to the type of fracture as well as factors related to osteonecrosis of the humeral head.
Conclusions: fracture of the proximal humerus is a common injury in older patients with osteoporosis. Its treatment depends on several factors related to the patients and may be conservative or surgical.
