Clinical-therapeutic behavior of Guillain-Barré syndrome in children
Abstract
Background: Guillain-Barré syndrome is a demyelinating polyneuropathy, inflammatory, acute, caused by immune mechanisms. It has a very variable clinical course and evolution in relation to the therapeutics in paediatric ages.Objective: to assess the clinical-therapeutic behavior of Guillain-Barré syndrome in paediatric patients.
Methods: a descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was conducted in admitted patients with diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome at Dr. Eduardo Agramonte Piña hospital, in the province of Camagüey, during a thirty-year-period (1985-2014). The universe was composed of 100 % of the patients with the diagnosis. The sample was made up of 37 cases from cero to 19 years of age.
Results: the 10 to 19 age group, white and male prevailed. Areflexia was found in most of the cases. The first more frequent signs and symptoms were strength loss, 35 cases presented pain and paresthesia. Defect in motor function began as it was supposed to. It affected first the inferior limbs in the majority of the patients. Its progress showed the same results in 18 cases, each one was had inferior and superior limbs affected. Bilateral paralysis was established in motor functions failure. Symmetry of the inferior limbs affected 18 patients. In the cytochemical study of the cerebrospinal fluid, glucose was normal and there were high levels of proteins in most cases. The most used therapeutic option was immunotherapy with vitamins. The less used ere plasma exchange, antiviral drugs and exchange transfusion.
Conclusions: behavior of the clinical-therapeutic manifestations of the paediatric discharged patients with Guillain- Barré syndrome in Camagüey was assessed.
