Manifestaciones orales en portadores de diabetes mellitus tipo 2 de reciente diagnóstico

Abstract

RESUMEN

Fundamento: la diabetes mellitus es un síndrome complejo constituido por diversos trastornos bioquímicos y metabólicos, que afecta a múltiples órganos y sistemas, constituyendo la alteración metabólica grave más frecuente en la población.
Objetivo: identificar las manifestaciones orales más frecuentes encontradas en pacientes recientemente diagnosticados como portadores de Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2.
Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal en el período de noviembre 2005 a noviembre 2008, entre el servicio de Endocrinología del Hospital Provincial Manuel Ascunce Domenech y la Clínica Estomatológica Docente Ismael Clark. El universo se constituyó por sesenta y seis pacientes, cuarenta y uno del sexo femenino y veinticinco del sexo masculino, con edades comprendidas entre cuarenta y dos y setenta y cuatro años. Se analizaron variables sociodemográficas, clínicas y presencia de factores de riesgo vascular asociados.
Resultados: predominó el sexo femenino (62%), piel blanca (64%), presencia de caries en 94% de los pacientes sin diferencia significativa entre sexos, así como el 58% con enfermedad periodontal con ligero predominio del sexo masculino y en el grupo etáreo de cincuenta y uno a sesenta años.
Conclusiones: el tabaquismo fue el factor de riesgo asociado más frecuente con todas las complicaciones orales, seguido de obesidad e hipertensión arterial.
