Characterization of bullying in male adolescents belonging to closed institutions
Abstract
Introduction: Bullying is defined as a social situation in which one or more students target another classmate with unfair aggression, subjecting them, over a prolonged period, to physical aggression, mockery, harassment, threats, social isolation, or social exclusion, taking advantage of their insecurity, fear, or personal difficulties in asking for help or defending themselves.
Objective: To characterize bullying among male adolescents in boarding schools.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with adolescents in boarding schools between September 2023 and January 2025. The universe included 700 adolescents, and the non-probabilistic, discretionary sample consisted of 119. The Bullying Assessment Questionnaire and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was administered.
Results: The study population was predominantly composed of 18-year-old adolescents from urban areas who were enrolled in vocational schools. In the victim category, there were 72 adoles cents (60.5%); in the perpetrator category, 24 (20.2%); in the bystander category, 23 (19.3%); and 81 (68.1%) reported low self-esteem. The most common forms of bullying were name-calling as a verbal manifestation and threats as a psychological manifestation in 64 (88.9%) of the adolescents.
Conclusions: The main forms of bullying included name-calling, teasing, insults, and threats, mostly perpetrated by aggressors identified within the same group. An individual association was found between two types of bullying: verbal and psychological. The low level of self-esteem was a revealing finding for all involved parties, and was particularly prevalent among victims.
