Clinical follow-up consultation and radiographic interpretation from the integration of knowledge in stomatology

Introduction: Oral disease generates a high demand for care and has a significant social, psychological, and environmental impact on individuals and society. Periodontal diseases (PD), as chronic inflammatory processes, constitute a major part of this problem, as their advanced progression leads to the loss of tooth-supporting structures. The interrelationship between PD and bruxism—the latter considered a risk factor that can aggravate periodontal damage—highlights the need for an interdisciplinary approach for its comprehensive management.
Objective: To substantiate from an interdisciplinary a proposal for a clinical-radiographic follow-up consultation for the comprehensive care of patients with periodontal disease and bruxism in Cama güey.
Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted to select the methodological aspects of a clinical follow-up and radiographic interpretation consultation for adult patients with periodontal disease, bruxism, bone defects, and other pathologies requiring interdisciplinary treatment. The study was carried out from September to December 2024 at the Ismael Clark y Mascaró Teaching Dental Clinic in Camagüey, Cuba, involving a population of experienced medical science professionals. The focus group technique was used to reach a consensus on the proposal.
Results: The methodological elements structuring the consultation were developed, defining its substantiation, objectives, social mandate, scope of application, agents (patients), required interdisciplinary team, inclusion criteria, lines of research, operational methodology (three types of visits), necessary documentation, and material resources. The proposed interdisciplinary team is led by a periodontist and includes key specialists. The consultation is organized into bi-weekly visits with specific objectives for evaluation, treatment, and follow-up.
Conclusions: A standardized scientific document is proposed for implementing a clinical follow-up and radiographic interpretation consultation based on the integration of knowledge in dentistry, in order to optimize the comprehensive care of patients with these interrelated conditions.
