Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in Sancti Spiritus City period 2014-2023
Abstract
Introduction: In 2019, Sancti Spíritus had the highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Cuba. Although local studies have examined its behavior and interventions with positive outcomes regarding its complications, no publications have analyzed its trends of prevalence for more than five years, considering distribution by municipalities and age groups.
Objective: To analyze the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the province of Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, during the period 2014-2023.
Method: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted in Sancti Spíritus, based on data from provincial statistical yearbooks from 2014 to 2023. Mathematical statistical methods were applied using Python, and Zotero was used for information management.
Results: The crude prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus showed an upward trend during the study period, increasing from 64,5 × 103 to 101,8 × 103, with a higher prevalence among females. In 2023, Sancti Spíritus, La Sierpe, and Yaguajay recorded the highest prevalence rates, followed in descending order by Fomento, Jatibonico, Cabaiguán, and Taguasco. The increase was significant across most age groups, peaking in the 50-64 age range.
Conclusions: Between 2014 and 2023, Sancti Spíritus exhibited a rising trend in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, affecting most age groups and municipalities, with a marked predominance among women. In 2023 year, it remained the province with the highest prevalence of the disease in the country.
