Survival of patients operated by advanced oral carcinoma according to post -surgical prognostic factors

Abstract

Introduction: The survival of patients operated on for advanced oral carcinoma depends on prognostic factors related to the patient, the tumor and the treatment.
Objective:
To determine overall survival at 5 years and according to post-surgical prognostic factors in patients operated on for advanced oral cavity carcinoma.
Methods:
A descriptive study was carried out on 88 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity in stages III and IVA, who received surgical treatment at the Conrado Benítez Oncological Hospital, between January 1st, 2019 and December 31st, 2023. The study population comprised all patients with stage III and IVA oral squamous cell carcinoma who underwent surgical treatment. The non-probabilistic and criterion-based sample included 88 patients. To achieve the proposed objective, the following variables were examined: survival time, tumor location, advanced ganglion condition, extra-ganglion extension, and number of adverse factors. For survival, the Kaplan-Meier method was applied. A value of p
Results: Patients with tumors located in the hard palate (five) and alveolar rim (eight), had a five-year survival of 100%. In contrast, none with tumors in the retromolar space survived. Those who were found to have an advanced ganglion condition and extra-nodal extension after surgery, survival was 21.2% and 24%, respectively. Single-factor, two-factor and three-factor survival were 50% and 35%, respectively, while the group with more than three adverse factors did not survive. Overall five-year survival was 65.2%.
Conclusions: Patients operated on for advanced oral cavity cancer had a high overall survival, although those patients with tumors located in the retromolar space and those with more than three adverse factors associated with them did not survive.
