Influence of oral prosthetic rehabilitation in edentulous patients with upper digestive tract diseases
Abstract
Introduction: Digestion is a function that begins in the stomatognathic system and can be altered by the partial or total absence of the teeth.
Objective: To determine the influence of oral prosthetic rehabilitation on the evolution of edentulous patients with upper digestive tract disorders.
Methods: A study was conducted with an experimental design of pre-experiment types of a single group consisting of 20 patients partially or totally edentulous and with digestive tract disorders. After prosthesis rehabilitation, initial symptoms and evolution after six months were evaluated. An instrument was applied to determine the impact of the treatment on oral health and related life quality. The following variables were used: Dependent: Evolution of patients with upper digestive tract disorders, upper digestive tract symptoms. Independent: age, sex, type of tooth loss, impact on oral health-related quality of life.
Results: Female patients and people aged 60 years and older represented (60 %) 12 of the total sample. Initially, gastric fullness occurred in 16 (80 %) of the patients treated and at the end of treatment it persisted in only 2 (10 %). In 80 % of all patients, the treatment applied had an impact on quality of life related to oral health.
Conclusions: Through prosthetic rehabilitation, it was possible to greatly alleviate the symptoms of the upper digestive tract and consequently improve the quality of life of the patients treated.
