Obturator ocular prosthesis
Abstract
Introduction: Buccomaxillofacial prosthesis is the art and science that allows the loss of anatomical structure of the craniomaxillofacial mass to be restored artificially. Its fundamental objective is to restore the anatomical architecture, function, and aesthetics, with the corresponding psychological recovery of the patient, which will allow them to raise their self-esteem and thus reintegration into society.
Objective: To describe the treatment plan followed to improve an ocular defect with communication to the sinus cavity, through an obturator ocular prosthesis.
Case report: A female patient, white, 69 years old, arrived at the Dentistry Prosthesis clinic of the Julio Antonio Mella University Polyclinic in the province of Camagüey, she was referred from Ophthalmology Services with a diagnosis of an ocular defect of the right eye with communication to the sinus cavity. During the interrogation, she stated that a few years ago she was operated on for obstruction of the right tear duct, the eye loss was due to a complication due to infection and the absence of vision in the left eye caused by glaucoma. Current ocular prosthetic rehabilitation moves easily, more frequently with the presence of secretions in the ipsilateral nostril coming from the nose through the communicating orifice.
Conclusions: With the use of the obturator ocular prosthesis in the patient's rehabilitation, it was possible to close the communication of the cavities and achieve physical, psychological, and social recovery.
