Educative program for favoring therapeutic adjustment in patients with antiretroviral treatment

Abstract

Background: each year, numbers of people infected with AIDS increase in the world. Infected people should follow antiretroviral treatment and make important changes in their lifestyles. Research has shown the difficulties the patients face to adjust to the treatments.
Objective:
to assess the effectiveness of an educative program based on the model Beliefs in Health, to favor therapeutic adjustment in patients with antiretroviral treatment in Manzanillo municipality.
Methods:
a quasi-experimental intervention study was conducted. The universe was composed of 71 AIDS sufferers from Manzanillo municipality, who had been indicated for antiretroviral treatment. The sample consisted of 25 patients. Martín-Bayarre-Grau questionnaire and a survey were used during the research process. Statistical processing was carried out with absolute numbers and percentage.
Results:
after the implementation of the program, only a 16 % of the patients did not adjust to treatment. Sixty-eight percent had high perceived sensitivity and eighty-eight percent had a high perceived severity with complications of AIDS/HIV. One hundred percent found many benefits in relation to pharmacological treatment, diet and protection, whereas seventy-two perceived few barriers.
Conclusions: the educative program was effective, since therapeutic adjustment in patients with antiretroviral treatment increased in Manzanillo municipality.
