Evolución y controversia de los trastornos temporomandibulares

Abstract

El estudio de los trastornos temporomandibulares se ha basado más en testimonios y opiniones clínicas que en la ciencia misma. Estos trastornos involucran un número de condiciones clínicas que incluyen los músculos masticatorios, articulación temporomandibular y estructuras asociadas. Se realizó una revisión acerca de la evolución de los conceptos y la clasificación diagnóstica. Se concluyó que los trastornos temporomandibulares son el resultado de múltiples factores y no dependientes de criterios morfológicos específicos o de las relaciones oclusales; los signos y síntomas son independientes del tratamiento para lo cual se requiere de un estudio multidisciplinario.
