Estudio cubano sobre tabaco o salud: caracterización en un área de salud

Abstract

Se realizó un estudio transversal para conocer el comportamiento del hábito de fumar en la población de 35 años y más, atendida en el policlínico Ignacio Agramonte del municipio Camagüey, durante 1996, como paso preliminar para constituir un estudio de cohorte que se seguirá durante 20 años, acerca de la mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo en dicha población. El universo de estudio ascendió a 6 591 personas, a quienes se les aplicó la Encuesta Cubana sobre Tabaco o Salud, procesada por métodos automatizados. La prevalencia de fumadores fue elevada (47 %) y muy vinculada significativamente al sexo masculino (65, 8 %) y a la presencia de malnutrición por defecto (24, 7 %), enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (4, 1 %), ulcus péptico (3, 8 %) e infarto del miocardio (2, 5 %).
