Caracterización de los pacientes ingresados por meningoencefalitis. 1995-2001

Abstract

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo con perfil epidemiológico en el Hospital Amalia Simoni de la Ciudad de Camagüey, se incluyó el total de pacientes con diagnóstico de meningoencefalitis que fueron estadísticamente reportados de forma consecutiva, en el período comprendido entre el 1 de junio del año 1995 al 31 de diciembre de 2002. Se incluyeron las variables: tipo de meningoencefalitis, año en que se presentó, sexo, edad, vacunación antimeningocócica recibida y evolución al egreso. Se identificaron 231 pacientes con diagnóstico de meningoencefalitis en la etapa de siete años y medio en adultos entre 15 y 82 años. Correspondieron a causa viral el 73,16 % de los casos y una franca tendencia a la reducción de la causa bacteriana. Hubo predominio del sexo masculino y la mayor frecuencia de presentación se produjo en el grupo etáreo comprendido entre 25 y 64 años. Aunque aproximadamente sólo una tercera parte de los enfermos pudo confirmar haber recibido la vacunación antimeningocócica previo al padecimiento de la enfermedad, el hecho de que el 95 % de los pacientes egresó vivo representó un paso importante en la reducción de la incidencia y mortalidad por estas entidades.
