Retinopatía de la prematuridad

Abstract

La retinopatía de la prematuridad es una enfermedad vasoproliferativa que afecta a los recién nacidos prematuros y que ocurre en el momento de desarrollo y maduración vascular. La retinopatía de la prematuridad es la causa más frecuente de ceguera infantil en países desarrollados. De los numerosos ensayos clínicos realizados se derivan el conocimiento de la historia natural de esta enfermedad y la evidencia de que el tratamiento realizado a tiempo disminuye el riesgo de pérdida visual. Por tanto, el cuidado efectivo de los recién nacidos prematuros exige que sean explorados cuidadosamente, en el momento adecuado y por un oftalmólogo con experiencia. A pesar del tratamiento, esta enfermedad aún representa un problema de salud mayor y produce substancial morbilidad, por lo que se decidió realizar la presente revisión bibliográfica.
