Behavior of Cardiorenal Syndrome in the Critically Patient Care Unit
Abstract
Introduction: Cardiorenal syndrome is a state of advanced dysregulation between the heart and kidneys, involving the impairment of both systemic organs due to acute or chronic dysfunction of one organ, which induces dysfunction of the other.
Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of cardiorenal syndrome in the Intensive Care Unit.
Methods: This was a descriptive, longitudinal, and prospective study. The study population consisted of 54 patients, of whom 47 were selected using an intentional, non-probability sample. The questionnaire data were processed using SPSS version 25. Descriptive statistics were used. The analysed variables were: age; sex; frequent symptoms upon admission; risk factors; type of cardiorenal syndrome; complications; length of hospital stay; and status at discharge.
Results: The average age was 57.1 ± 9.7 years. The most affected age group was 50 to 59 years, with a total of 21 patients (44.6%). The most frequent symptoms were edema in 47 patients (100%) and dyspnea in 35 (74.4%). Associated risk factors were chronic kidney disease in 31 patients (65.9%), heart failure in 23 (48.9%), and high blood pressure in 19 (44.1%). Hospital stays of 8 to 11 days were present in 20 patients (42.5%).
Conclusions: Cardiorenal syndrome is more frequent in men between 50 and 59 years of age. The most frequently occurring symptoms and signs were edema, and dyspnea. The predominant type of cardiorenal syndrome was type 5. The most frequent complications were acute pulmonary edema and pulmonary thromboembolism.
