Introduction: Breast cancer is a global health priority that requires improved early detection through specialized multidisciplinary training.
Objective: To evaluate the impact of a theoretical-practical mammography course for imaging diagnosis in Oncoplastic Surgery with residents from Plastic Surgery, Caumatology, and other related specialties.
Methods: A prospective, quasi-experimental, repeated-measures study (pre-test, immediate post-test, and delayed post-test) was conducted with 41 residents specializing in Plastic Surgery and Burn Treatment, General Surgery, and Oncology at the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital. Participants were selected using non-probability convenience sampling. Data analysis using SPSS 10.0 included normality tests (Shapiro-Wilk), comparisons using Student's t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, repeated-measures ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis, with a significance level set at p<0.050. The protocol was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee and complied with the Declaration of Helsinki.
Results: During the initial assessment, none of the residents exceeded the threshold of answering 75% of the questions correctly. After the intervention, 92.7% (95% CI: 80.1–98.5) achieved this level. Large effect sizes were observed in the pre-post comparison (Cohen's d: range between groups 1.89–3.27). Although intermediate-level residents showed the greatest absolute gain (+5.50 points), the groups achieved similar scores by the end of the rotation. Knowledge retention was significantly correlated with the number of clinical cases evaluated during the rotation (r = 0.71; p < 0.01).
Conclusions: The theoretical-practical mammography course enhanced the residents' ability to interpret images. These results support incorporating this type of training into multidisciplinary breast cancer programs. However, studies with larger samples are needed to generalize the findings.
