Rehabilitation in post-stroke patient care in the home environment
Abstract
Introduction: Stroke represents a global health problem. In Cuba, it is aimed that the patient's rehabilitation process is carried out without interruption. Rehabilitation stands as an essential component in the process of improving the quality of life of these patients in the long term.
Objective: To evaluate rehabilitation in the care of post-stroke patients in the family environment.
Methods: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted. The study population consisted of 86 stroke patients identified in the rehabilitation room of Basic Work Group 1 at the Pedro Borrás Astorga Polyclinic between April and July of 2024. The sample included 64 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Results: The age group of 60 to 69 years with 12 men had a skin color that was white, representing 18.8% of the sample. For ischemic stroke specifically, there were 56 cases, accounting for 87.5% of the total. Of the medications received by the patients, ACE inhibitors were the most common, with 61 patients, or 95.3%, taking them. Among the sequelae, social sequelae were the most notable, with 59 cases representing 92.2% of all cases. Regarding rehabilitation, partial recovery was most common, with 33 patients accounting for 51.6% of all patients.
Conclusions: Rehabilitation in the care of post-stroke patients in the family setting was established as an interdisciplinary process that requires environmental adaptations, as well as the participation of the patient and their relatives.
