Smoking in older adults with mild neurocognitive disorder in a community
Abstract
Introduction: The growth of the elderly population has been significant, accompanied by an increase in chronic diseases. Among these, mild neurocognitive disorder stands out. The degree of impairment is influenced not only by genetics but also by individual lifestyle factors. Within these, risk factors play an important role, with smoking being one of the most significant.
Objective: to identify the association between smoking and mild neurocognitive disorder in older adults.
Methods: An observational, analytical, and retrospective case-control study was conducted from January to December 2024. The study population consisted of 320 older adults from two clinics at the “Ramón López Peña” Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba. Patients were evaluated for mild neurocognitive disorder using the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination and the diagnostic criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Both former and current smokers were asked about the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the number of years they had smoked. The odds ratio (OR) was calculated for each risk factor with a significant association.
Results: Most participants were between 70 and 79 years old, had completed primary or secondary education, and were female. Smokers had 2.82 times greater risk of developing mild neurocognitive disorder. Habitual smoking of more than 11 cigarettes per day showed a significant association. The majority of cases (81.7%) reported having smoked for more than five years.
Conclusions: The study concluded that there is an association between smoking and mild neurocognitive disorder in older adults in the community.
