Impact of radiotherapy on the quality of life of cancer patients
Abstract
Introduction: The impact of biomedical technology on medical radio physics has led to the development of therapeutic procedures aimed at improving the well-being of cancer patients. In this context, radiotherapy has become the primary tool for treating cancer, used for both curative and palliative purposes.
Objective: To analyze the impact of applying the technological procedures of radiotherapy as a therapeutic modality, with the purpose of contributing to the continuous improvement of the quality of life of oncological patients.
Methods: A documentary review approach was employed that included scientific literature, medical reports, and relevant studies on the impact of radiotherapy on the quality of life of cancer patients.
Results: Technological advancements in medical radiophysics have made radiotherapy a more precise and safe procedure. Advances in dosimetric planning and techniques, such as three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, and image-guided radiotherapy, have minimized adverse effects and enhanced patient well-being. The procedure is organized into stages of simulation, dose calculation, clinical administration, and follow-up and is oriented toward preserving quality of life. In Cuba, incorporating these technologies has aligned oncological care with international trends.
Conclusions: Supported by technological innovation and the responsible practice of medical physics, radiotherapy is an essential therapeutic modality in oncological treatment. Proper application significantly impacts patients’ quality of life, reaffirming the need for continuous technological and professional updates to ensure safe, effective healthcare services.
