Risk factors associated with severe coronary lesions in patients undergoing invasive coronary angiography
Abstract
Introduction: Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in Cuba and the world; invasive coronary angiography is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that has proven to be a key pillar in the management of this syndrome to improve the quality of life of patients.
Objectives: To identify predictive risk factors for severe coronary lesions in patients who required invasive coronary angiography.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 329 patients who underwent their first invasive coronary angiography at the Hemodynamics Department of the Cardio Center University Teaching Hospital Ernesto Guevara in Villa Clara province, during the period from January to December 2018. Predictive risk factors for severe coronary lesions were identified, and Cramer’s V and odds ratio were applied.
Results: In the study population, males, hypertension, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (38.91%) were predominant. Subjects with hypertension predominated in the left anterior descending artery and its secondary branches; however, hypercholesterolemia was the predominant factor in the right coronary artery and the circumflex artery. The risk factors predictive of severe coronary lesions in all coronary segments were hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, smoking, diabetes mellitus, and age over 55 years for men and over 65 years for women.
Conclusions: The risk factors predicting severe coronary lesions were determined in general and for each of the coronary segments.
