Lost Nursing Care in Angola: An Analysis from Professional Experience

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Missed Nursing care is a widely documented and recognized phenomenon, associated with significant negative effects on care quality. Its occurrence is related to multiple organizational, human, and cultural factors, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Objective: To critically analyze recent scientific literature on missed Nursing care in a community in Angola, from a professional perspective.

Methods: A narrative literature review (2018–2023) was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus. The review included qualitative and quantitative studies addressing the omission or delay of nursing interventions, as well as the associated organizational factors and cultural barriers.

Results: The analyzed evidence identifies the main factors contributing to missed care as workload overload, staff shortages, institutional disorganization, and cultural differences between healthcare personnel and those receiving care. Highlights of improvement strategies include continuing professional education, time optimization, cultural awareness, and adopting technological tools. Work overload emerges as a central factor in missed care. Community-based nursing staff assume multiple simultaneous care, administrative, and educational roles without the necessary institutional support. This forces them to prioritize urgent tasks at the expense of other equally important, yet less visible, interventions.

Conclusions: Missed nursing care poses a significant and complex challenge to the quality of care, exacerbated by resource scarcity, excessive workloads, institutional disorganization, and cultural barriers. Prioritizing effective strategies, such as continuing education, time management, and cultural awareness, is essential. Additionally, promoting research in non-Western contexts is necessary to develop interventions that are adapted and tailored to local realities.
