Application of rectal ozone therapy in patients with chronic kidney disease
Abstract
Introduction: Ozone therapy is one of the therapies used in Natural and Traditional Medicine in Cuba. This procedure, through its mechanisms of action, produces a general antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, germicidal, and organ-regulating effect. It has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of acute and chronic conditions, primarily those affecting the musculoskeletal system. Studies have been conducted on its effect as an organ protector in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic liver disease; however, the evidence found regarding its application in chronic kidney disease at its different stages is insufficient, both due to a lack of scientific rigor and a limited level of recommendation. Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic response to rectal ozone therapy in two patients with chronic kidney disease. Case report: Two patients with chronic kidney disease, stages 2 and 3, respectively, were presented. A male patient with a history of hypertension, chronic diverticulitis, prostate adenoma surgery, and stage 3 chronic kidney disease, and a female patient with a history of exogenous obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and stage 2 chronic kidney disease, were treated with rectal ozone therapy. Analytical studies and the Karnofsky Performance Status scale were administered before and after therapy. At the end of the treatment period, favorable changes were observed in both patients. Conclusions: Ozone therapy can be considered for the treatment of chronic kidney disease.
