Growth and development of low birth weight children at one year of corrected age
Abstract
Introduction: Birth weight is, without a doubt, the most important determinant of a newborn's chances of experiencing satisfactory growth and development. Therefore, the rate of low birth weight newborns is considered a general indicator of health.
Objective: To characterize the anthropometric and clinical aspects of children with low birth weight belonging to the Previsora polyclinic during their first year of life, during the period January 2020 to May 2023.
Methods: A longitudinal and prospective descriptive study was carried out on the 61 children born underweight who arrived alive at their corrected first year of life. Information was collected from the clinical history. Descriptive statistics were applied to prepare frequency distribution tables and the Chi-square test and the sign test were used to describe associations and evolution.
Results: Low birth weight with a gestational age of less than 37 weeks predominated, with a total of 49 cases, and females, representing 60.7%. Overall, the majority of children born with low birth weight improved their anthropometric indicators during the first corrected year of life. Delayed psychomotor development, present in 31.2% of cases, and hearing and ophthalmological disorders, present in 6.6% of cases, respectively, were associated with birth weight.
Conclusions: Low birth weight remains a problem to be solved in the Previsora health area due to its impact on the growth and development of the child during the first year of life.
