Educational intervention on dental caries in children aged six to eleven years
Abstract
Introduction: Dental caries is one of the main causes of discomfort in children due to its high prevalence, and it can be prevented through health promotion from an early age. This study examines changes in knowledge about dental caries and its risk factors among schoolchildren.
Objective: To raise awareness about dental caries in children aged 6 to 11 through an educational intervention at the Forjadores del Futuro Primary School in Sierra de Cubitas municipality.
Methods: An educational intervention was carried out at the Forjadores del Futuro Primary School in Sierra de Cubitas from October 2023 to July 2024. The sample consisted of 42 children between the ages of six and eleven. A questionnaire was administered before and after the intervention to verify changes.
Results: Before the intervention, 37 children (88.1%) had insufficient knowledge of oral hygiene. After the intervention, 41 children (97.61%) demonstrated an increase in knowledge.
Conclusions: Systematic work is necessary in order to positively influence schoolchildren's level of knowledge, leading to a change in their behavior. The intervention proved feasible and effective in terms of knowledge about dental caries, and their levels of understanding increased.
