Hatha yoga exercise program for the rehabilitation of patients with post-COVID-19 respiratory sequelae
Abstract
Introduction: The multiple sequelae caused by COVID-19, especially at the level of the respiratory system, such as dyspnea (shortness of breath), highlight the need for comprehensive care for those affected by the pandemic. Among the treatments, therapeutic physical exercise is recognized as the primary non-pharmacological approach for providing adequate care to patients. Hatha yoga exercises are an essential component of their recovery and are recognized as promoting health and improving quality of life by exerting therapeutic and preventive functions on respiratory and psychological health.
Objective: To develop and implement a Hatha yoga exercise program to help rehabilitate patients with post-Covid-19 respiratory issues, such as dyspnea.
Method: A theoretical, practical, explanatory, observational, longitudinal, and retrospective intervention study was conducted. The study population consisted of 102 patients who attended the post-COVID-19 consultation with respiratory sequelae of dyspnea. A sample of 20 patients between 40 and 50 years of age was selected: 12 females and eight males.
Results: The evaluation of the Hatha yoga program for patients with post-COVID-19 respiratory sequelae (dyspnea) using descriptive statistics (minimum, maximum, and mode) showed satisfactory evolution, as measured by quantitative values.
Conclusions: The program's application demonstrated the effectiveness of Hatha yoga in the physical rehabilitation of patients with post-COVID-19 respiratory complications (dyspnea) during the recovery and discharge phases.
