Diagnostic of the obesity associated with breast cancer by means of bioelectrical impedance
Abstract
Introduction: Electrical bioimpedance is a method allowing to determine body composition and it is effective to diagnose obesity associated with breast cancer.
Objective: To evaluate body composition using electrical bioimpedance in women with breast cancer.
Methods: A cross-sectional analytical observational study was carried out on 67 female patients diagnosed with breast cancer at the Marie Curie Oncology Hospital of Camagüey province, in the period from January 2022 to October 2023. The behavior of body composition was evaluated using electrical bioimpedance. The following were determined: body mass index, abdominal perimeter, and percentage of body fat. The correlation between the fat percentage and other anthropometric parameters was established. Spearman's correlation coefficients and Cramer's Phi or V were used. The information was processed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 26.0.
Results: 47.76% of women (32) were between 50 and 59 years old. A predominance of obesity was observed by the percentage of fat obtained by electrical bioimpedance, (58) 86.57%. The results of the nutritional assessment and the percentage of fat showed a considerable positive correlation, Spearman correlation coefficient 0.650. A weak correlation was found between the percentage of fat by electrical bioimpedance and the abdominal perimeter to determine central obesity, Cramer's V correlation coefficient of 0.420.
Conclusions: The electrical bioimpedance contributes to determining body composition more precisely than conventional anthropometric methods.
