Oral health educational strategy related to dietary education and functional foods
Abstract
Introduction: Preventing oral diseases is a function of the specialist in Dentistry. Dental caries is a common oral disease in adolescents due to incorrect dietary education. Objective: To evaluate the contribution of an educational strategy for the improvement of the primary prevention of dental caries in adolescents, focused on dietetic education with functional food. Methods: An experimental study was carried out that began with the application of an educational strategy and included pre- and post-tests. The sample consisted of 415 adolescents, 33 of whom were probabilistically selected by simple random sampling from the 23 de Diciembre Urban Basic Secondary School. Theoretical and empirical methods were employed. Results: Before implementing the educational strategy, a low level of knowledge was identified in 15 (45.5%) and 12 (36.4%) adolescents in indicators 1.1 and 1.2, respectively. According to the indicators, attitudes related to the topic were unfavorable in 11 adolescents (3.3%) and 12 adolescents (36.4%), respectively. The practices were unfavorable. After applying the educational strategy, the level of knowledge changed to favorable according to the indicators in 20 adolescents (60.6%) and 19 adolescents (57.6%). Favorable attitudes were observed in 17 adolescents (51.5%) and 19 adolescents (57.6%) according to indicators 2.1 and 2.2, respectively. Practices also improved. Conclusions: After the educational strategy was applied, knowledge, attitudes, and practices rose to a favorable level, so the strategy was considered very effective.
