Clinical-epidemiological behavior of oral cáncer in Camagüey
Abstract
Introduction: Cancer is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. In Cuba, it is the second cause of death for all age groups. Oral cancer represents the sixth place among malignant neoplasms with important health and economic effects.
Objective: To characterize the clinical-epidemiological behavior of oral cancer in Camagüey province.
Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was designed, the universe consisted of 432 patients diagnosed with malignant tumors in the Head and Neck service of the Maria Curie Provincial Oncology Hospital in Camagüey province in the period from January 2019 to December 2023 and the non-probabilistic convenience sample was made up of 149 patients who presented the primary site of the lesion in the oral cavity.
Results: The age group of 50-59 years predominated in (39.59 %) n=59 of the patients and (76.51 %) n=114 belonged to the male sex; most of them practiced smoking, which represented (70.46 %) n=105 of the sample studied. The most frequent form of presentation was exophytic form, which was observed in (30.20 %) n=45 of patients; and squamous cell carcinoma constituted the histological diagnosis of (90.60 %) n=135 of malignant lesions. (32.88 %) n=49 of patients had the primary site of oral cancer in the tongue.
Conclusions: The most affected age group was 50-59 years old and the male sex in which oral cancer was most predominant, smoking was present in most patients and pain was the most reported symptom in the first consultation. The most frequent form of presentation was exophytic and squamous cell carcinoma was the most recurrent histological diagnosis. Most patients were diagnosed as stage II.
