Epidemiological clinical characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic non-transmissible disease and one of the main public health problems in Cuba and the world.
Objective: To describe some clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 96 patients classified as type 2 diabetics, belonging of the Ramón López Peña Teaching Polyclinic in the municipality of Santiago de Cuba from January to December 2023, variables such as age, sex, risk factors, comorbidities and presence of complications were determined. Descriptive statistical techniques such as absolute frequency and percentage were used.
Results: The older age groups (over 60) predominated with 72.9% of the cases and female sex (58.3%). Arterial hypertension (56.2%) was the most representative comorbidity, while inadequate diet (77%) was the most relevant risk factor. Diabetic neuropathy was the most frequent complication in these patients.
Conclusions: Type 2 diabetes mellitus was more frequent in older adults, mainly women; where inappropriate eating habits and lifestyles favored its appearance. The evolution of the disease determined the appearance of complications, which affects the quality of life in these patients.
