Group psychotherapeutic strategy for attitudinal change in a day hospital
Abstract
Introduction: Day care hospitalization represents a great option for patients with mental disorders. Group psychotherapy, a common treatment in this setting, is well known for its good results and reduction of costs, hence its global increased use. Day hospital in Camagüey for neurotic patients consists in 9 weeks for heterogeneous closed groups; a psychotherapeutic strategy was created, adjusted to that period of time.
Objective: To evaluate the results by applying the group psychotherapeutic strategy of behavioral change in patients admitted to the Provincial Psychiatric Teaching Hospital Commander René Vallejo Ortiz.
Methods: A mixed, longitudinal, prospective, action-research investigation was carried out. (Deep) psychiatric interviews, psychological tests, social history, two instruments to evaluate satisfaction levels (CSQ-8 y CRES-4), evolution according to clinic method and specialists’ criteria were carried out.
Results: 109 patients were assisted. The female sex almost tripled that of the male. Ages of 51 to 60 years were predominant, as well as married and professionals individuals. Anxiety disorder, Mixed depressive, anxious disorder and Adjustment disorder were common diagnosis. Both evaluative instruments showed high rates: 90.81 % of patients on CSQ-8; and 94.89 % on global CRES-4, and high levels of satisfaction were shown, notable problems resolution regarding the admission, and an important perception of emotional improvement. Clinical method showed good outcome and different levels of change in negative attitudes and worthy clinical evolution. Specialists’ criteria were positive.
Conclusions: Group psychotherapeutic strategy proved positive outcome both in high scores on questionnaires, clinical evolution, and patients, specialists and team’ criteria.
