Risk factors associated with low birth weight, Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Teaching Polyclinic
Abstract
Introduction: Low birth weight is the most important index to determine the newborn's chances of surviving and having normal growth and development. It constitutes one of the main current obstetric problems, as it is related to more than 75% of perinatal morbidity and mortality.
Objective: To determine the main risk factors associated with low birth weight.
Methods: A retrospective, longitudinal descriptive study was carried out in the El Caney Health Area, belonging to the Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Teaching Polyclinic, in the period from January to December 2021. The universe consisted of newborns with low birth weight and the sample was composed of 20 of them, selected through non-probabilistic sampling by criteria. The variables were the mother's age, gestational age at delivery, and prenatal risk factors that could constitute possible causes of low weight.
Results: The incidence of low birth weight was 5.4. 70% of them were born before the 37th week of gestation. The most representative maternal age was 20 to 34 years with 85%. The predominant prenatal risk factors in mothers with low birth weight newborns were anemia with 70% and vaginal infection with 35%.
Conclusions: Prematurity was the most frequent cause of newborns with low birth weight. Anemia, vaginal and urinary infections were the associated risk factors, most relevant in mothers with low birth weight children.
