Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with retained canines in the maxillary
Abstract
Introduction: A retained upper canine is one that, upon reaching the time of its normal eruption in the dental arch in an individual between 11 and 13 years of age, and having reached its full development, remains retained or enclosed in the maxilla and maintains its pericoronary sac intact.
Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with canines retained in the maxilla.
Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out on patients treated, initially in the Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of the Manuel Ascunce Domenech University Hospital, between January 1st, 2018 and December 31st, 2022. Clinical and epidemiological variables were studied.
Results: 72 patients were included, of which 44 (61.1 %) were female. In 41.7 % of the cases, the ages were between 13 and 15 years. Unilateral retention of the upper canine occurred in 62 patients (86.1 %), 41 patients (56.9 %) showed retention of the canine on the right side (tooth 13). The mesioangular situation was the most frequent, a condition that was shown in 54.2 % of the patients. Canines retained by palatine were the most frequent, presenting at 77.8%.
Conclusions: The female sex and the age group of 13 to 15 years predominated. The main retention was the right unilateral one. Mesioangular angulation and palatal presentation predominated. In most cases malocclusion was present.
